The Gospel of Luke today (Luke 5:1-11) is about Saint Peter's call, the Prince of the Apostles, to leave his family and livelihood to follow a man he had apparently never met.
But before Peter said yes to follow Jesus, he was asked by Jesus to “put out into deep water and lower his nets for a catch” to which he replied: “Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets" (a sarcasm in view of Peter's reluctance to listen). Then to his astonishment they (with his companions) caught a great number of fish that their nets were at the point of breaking, filing his boat and that of his partners nearby.
Our "Growin New York in Holiness, Service and Mission" theme this year, asks us to "let down our nets in deeper water", which at times we may feel skeptical, doubtful or plainly tired. But we have to remember that the Master Fisherman caused the catching of not only a great number of fish, but also the professional fisherman, Peter. Let us put away the "seasoned fisherman" in us, dubious of the Nazarene landlubber's (someone unfamiliar with the sea) invitation to fish and discover that - in "fishing with Jesus" our catch could exceed our wildest dreams, our capacities and may actually put our boat in danger of sinking, in a good way.
“Without me, you can do nothing” (John 15:5).
